Our shared standards
Community Guidelines
SharePlates works because neighbors trust neighbors. These guidelines apply to everyone — whether you're serving a plate, eating one, or sharing a recipe. By using the app, you agree to follow them.
Honest food, honest ingredients
- List every ingredient, including oils, butter, spices, sauces, broths, and garnishes. Hidden allergens cause real harm.
- Tag relevant allergens (nuts, dairy, gluten, shellfish, eggs, soy, sesame) accurately — don't guess.
- State when the food was cooked and any "best by" window honestly.
- If you wouldn't serve it to your own family, don't share it.
- Groceries must be unspoiled, unopened when claimed, and within their use-by date.
Food safety first
- Cook, cool, and store food at safe temperatures. When in doubt, throw it out.
- Use clean containers and wash hands before packing.
- Disclose whether your home is pet-free and smoke-free — many people are sensitive.
- Never share food that contains alcohol, raw/undercooked meats or eggs, or unpasteurized dairy without clearly stating so.
- Eaters: inspect your plate before eating. Trust your senses.
Respect and kindness
- No foul language, slurs, insults, or hateful content — anywhere in the app (listings, recipes, messages, reviews).
- No harassment, intimidation, or unwanted advances. Period.
- Be welcoming across cultures, diets, religions, and abilities.
- Assume good intent and communicate clearly.
Show up, on time
- If you claim a plate, pick it up in the agreed window. No-shows waste food and trust.
- If plans change, message the other person as early as you can.
- Servers: be ready at the agreed time and pickup spot.
- Bring your own container unless the sharer offers one.
Keep messages on-topic
- Use direct messages to coordinate pickup, ingredients, and dietary questions — not for solicitation, dating, or spam.
- Never share another member's personal information.
- Don't request payment for shared plates. SharePlates is gift-based, not a marketplace.
Not allowed
- Selling food, alcohol, cannabis, supplements, or anything regulated.
- Misrepresenting who you are, where food came from, or what's in it.
- Posting on behalf of a restaurant or commercial kitchen without disclosure.
- Sharing photos that aren't yours, or that show other people without consent.
- Anything illegal where you live.
Reporting & enforcement
Saw something off? Tap Report on a member's profile or inside a message thread, or use our report form. Pick a reason, share what happened, and our team will review.
Depending on severity we may warn, hide content, suspend, or permanently remove accounts. Repeated honesty failures around ingredients or allergens are treated seriously.
A friendly reminder
SharePlates is neighbors helping neighbors — not a restaurant, delivery service, or food bank. You're responsible for what you cook, what you claim, and what you eat. When in doubt, ask questions before you eat.
